Luzzati. The Fantastic Middle Ages

The Middle Ages are a recurring theme throughout Lele Luzzati’s artistic career, and the exhibition inaugurated in Genoa on 3 June 2024, celebrating the Master’s birthday as it does every year, is a vivid expression of this enduring inspiration. From Dante to Jacopo da Varagine, from Boccaccio to Ariosto, from Tasso to Boiardo, and on to Christopher Columbus, Marco Polo and the legendary knights, countless medieval themes and characters found their way into Luzzati’s work throughout his career as a stage and costume designer, illustrator and writer, ceramist and decorator, as well as a theatre and animated filmmaker—twice nominated for an Academy Award. Cities also play a central role, above all Genoa, Luzzati’s lifelong muse, presented through a variety of medieval depictions, alongside Rome, Jerusalem, Naples and Venice, with their historic architecture, rich histories and remarkable protagonists. The exhibition also highlights Luzzati’s contribution to cinema, beginning with the animated opening sequence he created for Mario Monicelli’s L’armata Brancaleone (1966).
This in-depth exploration of the Middle Ages also features works by other major artists, including the remarkable series of fifteen polychrome ceramic panels by Umberto Piombino dedicated to Christopher Columbus, generously loaned free of charge by ERG for the exhibition.
