About Casa Luzzati

Casa Luzzati is a place for connection, learning and creative development. Conceived as a centre for cultural production, its mission is to promote the art and life of Emanuele Luzzati while celebrating the creative freedom that characterises his many forms of artistic expression. Casa Luzzati is managed by the Lele Luzzati Foundation ETS, custodian of the collection of works donated by the artist’s heirs and the principal institution responsible for preserving, promoting and enhancing Luzzati’s artistic legacy.
Opened on 3 June 2021, during the celebrations marking the centenary of the artist’s birth, Casa Luzzati has become a hub for exhibitions, publications, talks, festivals and seminars. It is both a documentary space dedicated to Luzzati’s work and an open venue that welcomes collaborations with other archives, artists, cultural institutions and associations.
Particular attention is devoted to animated cinema, which lies at the very heart of Casa Luzzati. Together with Giulio Gianini, Luzzati received two Academy Award nominations for their animated films. The centre also explores the worlds of illustration, theatre, graphic design and design.
Il Cantiere delle Arti (Arts Workshop) is Casa Luzzati’s education and learning programme. It offers a year-round calendar of workshops and creative activities designed for schools, children and adults.

Discover Casa Luzzati

Casa Luzzati is a welcoming cultural centre with a variety of spaces dedicated to different activities. Alongside its exhibition galleries—often hosting more than one exhibition at a time—it offers areas for educational programmes, creative workshops and hands-on activities for anyone interested in the applied arts.
The Sala Gianini Auditorium hosts a rich programme of cultural events, including book launches, exhibition talks, lecture series and film screenings, such as Serate Animate (Animation Film Series). The auditorium is also available for private and corporate events.
Casa Luzzati regularly welcomes initiatives promoted by non-profit organisations, including WeCare, an association dedicated to supporting people affected by cancer.

The vertical machine

Luzzati and Gianini are considered to be the golden couple of Italian animation movies. United by the same passions, they lent their genius to serve their successful partnership that generated a series of animated movies with highly entertaining and exceptionally beautiful pictures. 

Two of these animated movies were nominated for an Oscar as Best Animated Short Film: La gazza ladra (1966)(The Thieving Magpie) and Pulcinella (1974). Their different yet complementary personalities have always worked in sync: the allocation of tasks was very clear from the beginning. The script, screenplay and direction were a joint effort. After this step, one of them would create a wonderful and colourful palette to which the other gave life, merging their talents and ideas into a rare alchemy. 

All the technical aspects - i.e. developing and printing films, editing and synchronising soundtracks - were Gianini’s job, assisted by his unique musical ear.The two authors had begun to realise that what had started as a fascinating game was turning into a real new profession for both of them. Thus, they set up their first studio in Via Nicotera 26, in Rome's Prati district. A large, airy room overlooking a small garden housed the animation desk - or vertical machine - and the drawing tables, with a smaller room for the slow motion camera and other equipment.
